Environmental groups are celebrating this Monday as funding for the “Farming in Protected Landscapes” program has been officially extended for another three years. This news coincides with the completion of a major wetland restoration project at the Shugborough Estate on the edge of Cannock Chase. The project, involving the river channel widening at Duck Covert, has created new shallow pools to support otters, insects, and rare birds. While the site remains restricted for wildlife recovery, the project is seen as a major win for flood alleviation in the Trent and Sow valleys. Conservationists are now calling for similar projects to be rolled out across the Rugeley transition zones of the Chase.

Should more areas of Cannock Chase be "rewilded" like Shugborough, even if it means restricting public access to certain trails?
