In a heated council meeting this afternoon, Cannock Chase District Council unveiled updated plans for the town center’s “Levelling Up” projects. The focus has shifted toward a more “leisure-centric” model to combat the decline in traditional retail footfall. Plans include the potential redevelopment of the old multi-storey car park site into a mixed-use community hub with independent cinema facilities and green spaces. However, local business owners have raised concerns regarding the removal of affordable parking spaces during the construction phase. The council leader emphasized that without these “bold changes,” the town center risks becoming obsolete compared to neighboring shopping outlets. A public consultation phase is set to begin early next month.
